The Science and Art of Novel Glazes for Ceramics

Abstract:

A key attraction in ceramic art is the colorful coatings that the works can have.  The presentation will begin by introducing key ideas and vocabulary of ceramic art, materials and processing.  From this foundation Mr. Irvine will discuss and exhibit the novel glazes and processing he has developed.  The talk will explore the science behind and show samples of his unique approach to lustre glazing, a process that produces colorful iridescent surfaces.  Last, he will share and discuss additional samples of his past work using rare earth and even (depleted) radioactive elements to create rich and dynamic colors.
